Initial Access
Our analysis revealed that the threat actor initiated the attack through a series of convincing phishing emails. Upon clicking the link, users unknowingly downloaded a document containing a macro that would execute a PowerShell command designed to download the implant.
Execution & Persistence
The sample we examined utilized a malicious document that upon opening executed a hidden macro. This macro executed a PowerShell script that connected to a remote server and downloaded a second-stage payload. The payload established persistence by creating a scheduled task under the following path: C:\Windows\Tasks\MalwareTask. This task ensured that the implant was executed at logon, minimizing the chances of detection by standard security measures.
Command and Control
During the investigation, we identified that the malware communicated back to the C2 server using encrypted traffic over HTTPs. The C2 domain displayed evasion techniques such as domain fluxing, which made it difficult for defenders to block the malicious infrastructure without disrupting legitimate traffic. The primary domain observed was registered shortly before the attack, indicating a possibility of prior reconnaissance. Upon connection, the malware utilized specific API calls to exfiltrate data and issue commands as needed.
Lateral Movement & Discovery
Following initial infection, lateral movement was executed leveraging the compromised credentials of email accounts within the organization. The actor employed techniques such as T1071.001 – Application Layer Protocol: Web Protocols to navigate to other machines. We found the execution of net use and PsExec commands in the logs, facilitating the propagation of the malware to additional machines in the network.
